Relatively speaking – American politics is nuts
def. Moral Relativism (or Ethical Relativism): The position that moral or ethical propositions do not reflect objective and/or universal moral truths, but instead make claims relative to social, cultural, historical or personal circumstances.
The reason for this lofty-sounding philosophical gobbledygook is due to this chart that was released by Gallup today measuring the satisfaction with the moral and ethical climate in the United States. The red line indicates that Republicans are now more satisfied with the “moral and ethical climate” of the country than they have been for the last 8+ years.
“I believe he’s president of the United States for a reason,” Evangelist Franklin Graham said. “I believe God put him there.”
The timing is interesting. Once Barack Obama left office, those on the right in the US decided that, finally, America was back on the righteous path with Donald Trump in the Oval Office. And, amazingly, over time they are increasingly more satisfied.
So, lets recap the last year shall we? On second thought, let’s not. Let’s just sum up.
The great Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale has been documenting Trumps lies and he has counted 1,064 false claims since his inauguration, an average of 2.9 per day, through the one year anniversary this past week.
Daniel is being conservative. The Washington Post has the lie total over 2000.
There are hundreds of lawsuits in action against the sitting president ranging from his profiteering from the Presidency to his race-based immigration crackdown and ICE deportations of anyone who is not pink, or orange one would presume.
Oh, and of course he’s being investigated for working with the Russians to steal the election, and he’s such a larcenous twerp, that possible nothing burger looks like it has morphed into an obstruction of justice case instead.
That’s just the ethical side of things.
Morally the Pussy-Grabber in Chief has long been the opposite of the paragon of virtue. He’s been charged with sexual harassment and assault by 19 women, one of which is currently suing him.
Now we’ve learned that he paid off a Porn Star with $130K to keep her quiet about an affair he was having while Melania was getting over giving birth to their son Baron, and it’s looking increasingly like he used campaign finances to do it. (He’s being investigated over that one as well.)
Apparently, his wife just found out about that one as well as she’s cancelled any appearances with him, and on the one year anniversary of the inauguration posted a picture of her – without him in it.
All that, and yet Republicans haven’t felt this good in years about things.
“This [alleged affair with Stormy Daniels] happened 11, 12, 13, 14 years ago… All of us are sinners,” Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, said in a CNN interview Tuesday night.
It’s amazing, mystifying and deserves serious study as to why this group of people, either due to epistemic closure, or something else, can be so blind to what is so obvious to the rest of the world, and the vast majority of the rest of the American people.
It’s probably just a coincidence that the man he replaced was one of those brown people. One of those brown people whose top scandals were, in order, preferring Grey Poupon mustard over French’s, (Grey Poupon is manufactured in Michigan BTW), and wearing this suit at a White House podium:
