Charlotte & Jack’s Eulogy

Charlotte & Jack’s Eulogy

My name is Charlotte and this is my brother Jack, we were lucky enough to be the grandchildren of a really amazing person. Growing up, our Granny was a source of constant comfort, reassurance and most of all fun. She loved to laugh and play with us, and was always so supportive of our creative endeavors.

She had a number of games she invented just for us. Our favorite was called treasure hunt, we had made these various shapes and symbols out of Bristol board, a bunch of eggs for some reason? We called them our jewels, of course. And she would hide them around her house for us to go find. I remember every time we would arrive at our grandparents house we would head immediately to the games cupboard to grab them and bring them to Granny, begging her to hide them which in hindsight is pretty annoying but she never seemed to have an issue with it. She was endlessly patient and kind, and we always knew how much she loved us.

Every year Granny would create an elaborate multi-step easter egg hunt with individualized riddles for each participant. Not just for the kids, mind you, but for the adults as well. That’s like 5 to 10 clues each for seven people, like 70 rhyming clues every year, all written in beautiful calligraphy. That’s crazy. We would all go off on our own trail of clues, running into each other as we raced to see who would finish first. All the while Granny would watch us and laugh, so happy that we were all having so much fun. She wanted every occasion to be memorable and every person to enjoy themselves. She loved when we were all together, happy and laughing, having fun as a family.

She was such a source of inspiration for us, earlier this year I took a pottery class and she was the first person I thought of to tell. She was delighted to hear all about it and gave me tips as though she had thrown some pots that morning. The art she created over the years lives on, some of which you can find at the table with the guest book.

She always had a great story about ww2, she was a style icon and knew how to pose, she could make an amazing yule log, and her laugh could be heard across any room. She thought the ink in my tattoos was poison and so in her memory I’m planning on getting a poison bottle tattoo. She also loved to remind me how tall I am even though i do own a mirror. I dont golf very often but I’m weirdly good at it, which I attribute to being her grandson. I will truly miss her.

There are many aspects of Jack and myself that we owe to Granny, and every time I hear my mom or uncle gavin laugh I can hear her laughing too. We are so grateful for our grandfather Rod, who we love very much. We are incredibly touched that so many other people saw her for what a special person she was and are here today to celebrate together.

Thank you everyone and we love you Granny.
